Exterior Lighting Design: Deck Lighting Tips

June 3rd, 2016

Lighting can make a huge difference when it comes to the look and feel of any living space, especially outdoors. Whether you use your deck or porch for entertaining or just as an access point into your home, it’s important to have strategically placed lighting if it’s going to be used after dark. Different types of light fixtures can be used to illuminate stairways, grills, and seating areas to create the perfect ambiance while adding safety and visibility.

Types of Deck Lighting

Post Cap lighting

Cap lighting is installed on top of rails and posts. Post cap lights are directed down and out on all sides illuminating a wider radius than other types of lighting. These are great for adding light to not only the railings, but the surrounding areas as well.

Accent lighting

Accent lighting is used to focus on a specific area. Fixtures such as post lights, bullet lights, or uplights can be used to illuminate the deck itself or specific focal points such as plants, fountains, or statues using either direct light for a more obvious effect or backlighting to give it a subtle glow.

Under rail lighting

Under rail lighting can be installed under deck or stair railings casting a downward glow to mark the perimeter of your deck or to brighten stairways. Adding dimmers to your under rail lighting allows you to control the brightness of your lights to give you the desired ambiance.

Recessed lighting

Recessed lighting can be done using fixtures such as uplights, stair lights, or bullet lights which are installed flush with your deck or stair risers illuminating stairways or focal points while hiding the fixtures.

Whether you are in the process of building a new deck or want to brighten up an old one, the right lighting can add the perfect finishing touch and completely change the atmosphere! Remember, it’s important to find the right amount of lighting focused on the right areas. Whether you decide to stick with one type of fixture or use a combination in your deck lighting design, it’s best to spread lights out than to focus all attention on one area.
